The News from Washington – Local is Good

September 7th, 2009

Back in July David Dickie spoke at the International Aid & Trade event, held this year in Washington, DC.

He was on a panel chaired by the BBC’s Brian Hanrahan alongside representatives of the American Red Cross, Transparency International, Trade Without Borders and the Millennium Challenge Corporation.

The official Workshop Report, just published this week, says, “Advance Aid Director David Dickie argues that because there is a higher risk and a large environmental impact created by bringing aid to Africa from other locations, it would be more effective to manufacture emergency items in-country.”

And Trade Without Borders takes a similar view, “Joseph S. Fernandez of the non profit social enterprise Trade without Borders agrees with Dickie.  His organization is working to procure goods from micro-entrepreneurs and enable micro-manufacturers (such as small local artisans).  Trade without Borders aggregates product requirements for small retailers, NGOs, and micro entrepreneurs, placing larger orders with manufacturers and suppliers in order to save money and resources.”

Local is increasingly becoming seen as Good, and Advance Aid will have more to say on this early next month.
