TRADE & AID
The world has been sending aid to Africa for over 100 years. Economically, there has been no improvement in Africa. In fact, when compared to the rest of the developing world, Africa has gone backwards since the Live Aid phenomenon over 20 years ago. When Bob Geldof so courageously brought Africa’s plight into global consciousness, Africa’s share of world trade was about 7%. Today it is around 2%. Take out South Africa and it’s just 0.6%. So despite all the shouting Africa has gone backwards.
During this same period of time, both India and China have managed to lift millions of people out of poverty - what were ailing economies have become world leaders.
We believe the next 20 years should belong to Africa.
The world spends US$12bn (and rising) every year on emergencies. The majority ends up in Africa - yet only a small percentage of this aid is manufactured there, despite the fact that there is a growing manufacturing capability on that continent. Advance Aid is all about turning this statistic on its head, by enabling African companies to manufacture their own aid.
